umstead...

Yesterday I DNFed at Umstead. I made it to 62.5 miles. My last lap was twice as slow as the previous four laps. My legs were completely trashed after 50 miles. The weather was warm and humid, and I foolishly did not deviate from my ambitious plan to run even ~1:45 splits.

I'm sorry to all who I let down. The support I had was absolutely perfect. Thanks to Brad and Andrea for the accommodations in Raleigh.

I'll continue to run and post to the blog when I can up in WV.

Matt, you inspire us all. I know you are disappointed and I hope you find a new home in WV and Uwharrie can enjoy your new surroundings.

Don't let it get you down, you are a strong runner.

Matt,
Success does not come without failure or sacrifice. Make all efforts to learn from your experience.

Sorry the race didn't go as planned. Your 50 mile time was pretty impressive, though. Look forward to reading more stories soon. Enjoy WV.

Matt, you have been a pretty huge inspiration to me too. You somehow managed to inspire me to run my first half marathon. I could have gone a bit further, maybe 18 miles, but nowhere near 63 miles. amazing, really.

I understand your disappointment, but what you did was amazing to me.

Matt you won the 50 mile event outright. It's a good consolation prize anyway. Enjoy your outstanding conditioning! Hope to see you on the trails soon.

Matt,
We all have off days. It seemed like you were dead on for half of your day. I know how hard you trained. That schedule was absolutely brutal! I struggled at my race as well and had a rare DNF. I just did 50 miles but it'll light a fire under me for the next few races.
