westward


I've recently pondered "earth shine" while gazing up into the night sky. Just above the western embers of sundown, the body of a grinning Cheshire cat moon reflects the shine. This light comes from the albedo of the Earth. An astronomer stands on an ancient Appalachian crescendo above the haze of the surrounding asphalted country-side wondering: our we dimming the shine?

It's been mostly downhill since leaving The Mountain Institute. I'm red-eyed from drinking petrol all night. Uwharrie's digestive system is in serious question. We're not in the best health to endure the g-force of interstate travel. But here we are together again, haggard and homeless, for better or for worse, on the road...
