perspective

If it was up to me, I would've bagged the trip. No matter how sweet the Shining Rock, I was completely drained from a hectic week.

A stack of binders in need of grading, progress reports, lesson planning for two classes: my weekend homework. I don't have time for this...

It's the underprivileged student who was packed and ready to join us that changed my mind. Bleary-eyed from a sleepless night (his fleece blanket just couldn't cut it over a mile high), mesmerized by this new world, he snapped away with my camera.

These images help put things in perspective.

TGIF. Temporary relief from the torrent. Good times. Condensed.

holding together

Taking a moment... Hectic, but maybe a stronger foothold on things now. It should be a good year. In addition to Earth & Environmental Science this semester, we have an ecology club and an elective entitled "Healthy Living" with endless opportunities. I hope we can get some students inspired to get outside and get moving. Lily and I have been biking together, helping each other make sense of the madness.

Recently I got around to compiling a little memoir for the BMT fastpack, which is something I've been meaning to do for some time thanks to all the audio/video uploaded by Josh. I'm already thinking about the big one for next summer. There are some classic fall and winter adventures lined up and I look forward to having some more fun on the weekends when we're not scrambling like crazy! See you out there.

first daze

monday: 10.5 hours logged. Last week’s teacher work days mostly by bike; today, none such sanity. Schools all screwed up, screwing, screwing. Bore a tree.

It’s beautiful to be outside in the woods with students. Learning, thanks to Lily.

Tears and beers. Moving to the third. Been in a dark mood lately…

good beer. no shit.
