the hidden jewels of appalachia

Thanks to Joe Milmoe for this video. I think he did a great job capturing the beauty and fragility of his subject:

rest of summer

A picture is supposedly worth a thousand words. Below are 24 more to round out our last few weeks of vacationing in July. After spending time near Shining Rock with my folks, Lily Uwharrie and I embarked on a ten-day exploration of the Monongahela with our good friend Mark. We then made our way to Hampshire County for a relaxing weekend visit with Jess. On our way back to NC, I got a chance to hike 70 miles of the AT over a day and a half with Odyssa. She and her not-so-secret weapon (Brew) are absolutely tearing it up... Go Jen! Special thanks to Mark and Jess for the good times!

back to the future

Shortly after posting my MST write-up, the July/August issue of Orion arrived in the mail with this article by James Howard Kunstler on the future of cities. I found it an interesting read and perhaps you will too. There is an opportunity to participate in a forum about this article on July 12th.

Right now, we're not sure what the future holds for us regarding where we'll continue to live in the Appalachians. I hope it will be in a community that embraces alternative transportation, or at the very least shares a little bit of road...
