ain't no bugs on me

I know of at least one other MYOGer who might be interested in a recent fastpack gear project of mine, which amazingly, despite a hectic schedule, went straight from mind to matter one evening last week: a 10 oz. bug bivy. Before you scoff at the weight, keep in mind that this includes a built-in sleeping pad.

What makes this project noteworthy is the added challenge I (arbitrarily?) imposed upon myself to not buy any new materials, but build the bivy completely from scraps. Fortunately for me, I still have access to a good bit of cuben fiber, so the bathtub style floor is rather fancy. On top of that, secured by 2-sided tape is a full-length foam pad (gray = 1/4" thickness on the torso-knee region; black = 1/8" thickness). The zipper is reused from a salvaged duffel and the no-see-um is leftovers from the local fabric shop. Not too shabby, and considering our exceptionally warm spring, probably a good bit handy to have armed and ready.

Sweet build!! Has anyone else made a bug bivy with a built in pad?? You have a great ability to think outside the box when it comes to building gear that is consolidated into fewer pieces.

Caleb, not sure, but I highly recommend taping the pad to the bivy to save some set-up time. In the past, I've just sewn the top fabric to the (closed-cell foam) pad and omitted the waterproof bottom fabric altogether, however some foam you can securely sew, some you can't. I've learned the hard way that the foam pictured here rips easily with stitches.

Hi,your bivy looks great! Did you sew the netting to the bivy or would double sided tape do the job? All the best, Chris.

Chris, I sewed the netting to the floor. I don't know of any tape that noseeum netting sticks well to, but maybe there is such a tape out there...?

Interesting design.

Do you enter by a top zipper or front zipper?

Is it bulky with the foam insert installed?

Happy Trails

tpkanu, hopefully you can make out the placement of the zipper. Yes, you enter through "top" zipper. I'm quite happy with this placement, the ease of entry/exit is greatly improved. Do you use a foam pad? If so, the bivy material adds little volume. If not, you may not want to attach a pad, but I prefer using foam.
